In the early 1970s, while a student of Dr. Milton Erickson, Dr. Ernest Rossi discovered some research on Ultradian Rhythms. Ultradian Rhythms are natural biological rhythms of the human body that have an approximate period of 90 minutes to 120 minutes. I am sure you are aware of rhythms of your body that have a period of 24 hours. An example would be sleep. Every 24 hours you get sleepy and go to sleep. Rhythms such as the sleep cycle that happen every 24 hours are called Circadian Rhythms.
Body rhythms that cycle longer than a day, such as a woman’s menstrual cycle are known as Infradian Rhythms.
Rhythms that happen many times in a 24 hour period are called Ultradian Rhythms. Are you aware of your body’s ultradian rhythm? In the ultradian rhythm, a person’s physical and mental processes would be humming along in a highly turned on state. But every hour or so, the person experiences the physical and mental state quieting down and relaxing. Most are not aware of this internal cycle. And it is quite common for a person to need a break from work and smoke a cigarette during this quieting down phase.
Dr. Rossi brought ultradian rhythms to Dr. Erickson’s attention and they both agreed that the low phase of the ultradian rhythm was responsible for therapeutic trance and for deep healing of both the mental and physical.
After Erickson’s death in 1980, Dr. Rossi spent years and years researching ultradian rhythms and their relationship to hypnosis and trance and deep healing. Dr. Rossi wrote a book for the layman on ultradian rhythms, how to recognize them in yourself and how to use them for health and healing. The book is now out of print, but copies can always be found on the internet. Search for “The 20 Minute Break” by Dr. Ernest Rossi.
According to Rossi’s book, there are “hundreds of research papers that demonstrate that an overwhelming number of the mind-body systems run on the same 90 to 120 minutes ultradian rhythm of peak activity followed restorative troughs. In fact research indicates that all our major mind-body systems of self regulation – the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine system, and immune system have important 90 to 120 minutes cycles.”
One can only conclude from this that your immune system (you know, the system that fights off Covid-19) can be made much stronger if you learn to recognize your ultradian rhythms and learn to allow yourself to slip into a restorative healing mindset when the rhythm calls for it.
This is a recently published Youtube video showing Dr. Rossi talking about and demonstrating the healing response that takes place every 120 minutes. Experiencing Comfort
