My office is in Marin County of Northern California. If you have been watching the news, you know this is the heart of FIRE country, right in the middle of all the fires in Northern California.
It occurred to me that there many similarities between the thinking that causes social anxieties and the thinking that cause anxieties during this fire season.
In both cases, a person is thinking, just below the level of awareness, about all the bad things that MIGHT happen. In the case of Fire, a person might be imagining his property or himself is going to burn up. In the case of social anxiety, a person may be imagining people laughing at him, or throwing eggs at him. In either case, a person believes his thoughts as if they were true. He allows himself to be hypnotized by his thoughts and acts on them as if they were true.
A lot of the work I do can be thought of as dehypnotizing someone. I help someone realize that his thoughts have nothing to do with reality, that there is no reason to feel anxious.
