There are two parts to your mind. You have the conscious part, the part you are aware of all the time. And you have the subconscious part that you are not usually aware of. The subconscious part is running the show when it comes to unwanted habits like smoking, over-eating, phobias, or pain. Going into a trance makes it very easy to talk with the subconscious mind and suggest to him or her that she change the unwanted behavior.
